Swimming & Water Sports Guide
When the temperature rises, Mallacoota transforms into a water lover’s paradise. With a mix of safe estuary swimming, ocean beaches, and calm lakes for kayaking and paddleboarding, there’s something for every age and ability. Whether you’re here to splash, surf, or float the day away, this guide has you covered.
Best Beaches for Swimming
Bastion Point is the main beach, offering a gentle gradient for swimmers and lifeguard patrols in summer. For calm, family-friendly waters, head to the shallows at the Main Wharf or the sandy banks near Coulls Inlet. Kids will love paddling there, and it’s a great picnic zone too.
Kayaking & SUP
With long stretches of protected water, Mallacoota Inlet is perfect for stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. Launch near the foreshore or the lakeside boat ramps, then explore winding arms, creeks, and wildlife-rich coves. Early morning is best — glassy water and golden light are magic.
Surf & Boogie Boarding
Bastion Point is also your go-to for light surfing and boogie boarding. It’s mellow enough for beginners but still offers a decent wave when conditions are right. Always check for rips, and if in doubt, stick to flagged areas during patrols. The Surf Shack offer surf board hire and lessons.
Boat Hire & Tours
If you’re not travelling with gear, Mallacoota has several places to hire boats, kayaks, or SUPs — Mallacoota Hire Boatss or Bucklands Jetty have a range of hire options. Some holiday homes even include kayaks or beach gear. View Hammond Properties stays for rentals close to the water and inlet access.
