Whale Watching & Winter Wildlife Spectacles
Winter might be Mallacoota’s quietest season for visitors, but it’s one of the loudest for nature. Migrating whales, playful seals, and nesting seabirds all show up when the crowds die down. If you don’t mind a beanie and a bit of brisk air, this time of year offers some of the most rewarding wildlife encounters on the coast.
Whale Watching
From May through September, humpback and southern right whales cruise past Mallacoota as part of their annual migration. The best vantage point? Bastion Point. Bring binoculars, a warm jacket, and patience — you’ll often see spouts or tail slaps in the distance, especially after storms.
You can also walk sections of the Secret Beaches & Coastal Walks for quieter lookouts with higher elevation and fewer people.
Seals & Dolphins
Seals love to sun themselves on the offshore rocks just out from Bastion and Captain Creek. If you’re lucky, you’ll also spot dolphins surfing the waves or darting around fishing boats near the entrance. Bring your camera — but zoom lenses are your friend here.
Birdwatching in Winter
Eastern curlews, hooded plovers, and sea eagles are active along the coast during the cooler months. Head toward the sandspit or the mouth of the Inlet for the best chance of spotting multiple species. Winter also marks breeding season for some birds, so keep your distance and tread lightly in sensitive areas.
Wildlife-Friendly Tips
